Denis Meuthen's paper is now online in Oecologia. His father, the haematologist Ingo Meuthen, did the blood-cell counts. Alarm cue-exposed fish had twice as many lymphocytes in peripheral blood as did controls, thus suggesting an anticipatory and adaptive plastic response of the cellular immune system.
